Despite the ongoing development of the past 20 years, Shanghai was not considered to be a competitive global city until 2002. At that very moment, having the winning bid for 2010 World Expo, the era of 'New Shanghai' was launched. Within the concept 'Better City, Better Life', Shanghai invested in itself, making it into one of world's leading metropolis.
The aim of the day is to explore the city within the coexistence and/or the opposititon between Global and Local, High and Low end. From the Chinese-Western integration to the Expo's overpowering globality, walking through the city is going to be a roller-coaster between the two edges. In this high-end/low-end battle, where is Shanghai standing? Has it become a cosmopolitan cultural center as well as major business hub? How does it exist as a global city of the century?
