Microcity experience begins on Friday afternoon with a walk through traditional places in Shanghai. We will visit street market at Ninghe Road to trace the origins of local produce, iconic Lane houses to explore division of shared and private, explore the human-scale of old town, social and economic context, adaptation, repurposing and co-habitation in low-income neighborhoods and transitional neighborhoods giving way to large scale redevelopment schemes.
By discovering the local scale of asian megacity we attempt to search for authentic cultural forms and spaces. What is left from the local where intense rhythm of life and redevelopment are forever changing the face of the city? Does it need any form of tradition and reference to the past?
To understand how Shanghai operates at the ground level, at the scale of community-based activities and initiatives we decided to bring together different local professionals under the roof of Design Commune for the talk, organised together with TEDx Shanghai coordinator Richard Hsu. «Moscow-Shanghai Urban Forum» will be followed by the visit to Propaganda Art Center, where history of XX century China is displayed through agitation posters. We will end the «microcity» day with subculture music night at «The Shelter» club. And remember, local is the new global!
